Thank you for your interest in submitting an application to the Art Gallery. The Art Gallery is an excellent avenue to showcase and sell your original western art!
Please note, this year we will only be accepting applications on our on-line form. If you have difficulty using this form or uploading files as requested, please email our Artist Liaison at firstname.lastname@example.org .
The on-line application is usually available on this web site by November 1 for the following year. The deadline is in early January. Artists are required to submit photos between 4 and 8 pieces of art with their application for consideration. All art submitted must be available for sale during the 10 days of Stampede for the upcoming year.
Gallery Application FAQ
Below are some commonly asked questions regarding applications. While these questions help clarify some common questions, artists are responsible for reading the Terms and Conditions as they provide the entire scope of information about participating in the Art Gallery.
How do I apply to the Art Gallery?
Artists must submit an application, using our on-line form, in its entirety by the deadline listed on the application (usually the first week of January). If you have difficulty with the on-line form, please email email@example.com.
How do I apply to the New West: A Student Show?
This new opportunity is only available to students enrolled in a full time accredited post secondary visual arts/fine arts program. For information on participating in the show, please read the Terms and Conditions for the New West: A Student Show . To apply, student artists must complete the on-line application form.
How many years can an artist participate in the Art Gallery show?
All submissions are seriously considered; however, the focus of the Gallery is to give new and emerging artists to the Stampede an opportunity to showcase their work. When an artist has participated in the Gallery for more than five years, he or she will not be considered for the Gallery again. We appreciate the valuable contribution these artists have made to the success of the show and we strongly encourage them to apply to the Artist Studio (booth rental) or submit pieces to the Auction.
When will the application be available on the website?
Application packages are normally on the website by November 1 for the following year.
Why does the Art Gallery committee ask to view between 4 and 8 art pieces?
Since we generally accept about 4 pieces of art from each artist, viewing 4 to 8 art pieces provides the jury committee with an accurate representation of the artist’s work and more choice in selecting art for the show.
How are the artists selected?
Following the application deadline, the Gallery volunteer committee reviews the applications to ensure all submissions meet the Gallery criteria. The submitted pieces then progress to the jury process. An invitational jury panel—consisting of a professional artist, an art educator and an independent gallery owner—view submitted art pieces and select the artists and pieces that will be sold during the 10 days of Stampede. The Art Gallery committee reserves the right to make the final selections in order to ensure the show is balanced with respect to subject matter and mediums. Artists are notified of the panel’s decision by email by the end of March.
Does the Art Gallery accept photographers’ pieces?
No. The focus of the Art Gallery exhibit is to showcase new and emerging original works of art. Photographs can be submitted to the Photo Gallery Committee at http://westernshowcase.calgarystampede.com/new/western_photo.htm
Are there size and/or price restrictions when submitting art to the Art Gallery?
There are neither size restrictions nor a prerequisite price range on the accepted pieces. Please note that art pieces within the Gallery exhibition tend to sell better if they are priced less than $1000 and we limit the number of pieces we accept that are $2,000 or more. Further, we have limited space for displaying over-sized pieces of art.
Is there a commission if art is accepted?
A commission of 30 per cent is deducted from the gross sale proceeds and payable to the Calgary Stampede. Payment for sold artwork could take the Stampede 4 to 6 weeks after the show.
Do I need to attend the Stampede to sell my art?
Gallery artists are not present to sell their own work during the 10 days of Stampede as all art is sold by Gallery committee volunteers. However, artists are encouraged to attend Stir’up (buyers’ night) for which they will receive an invitation.
Can non-Canadian artists apply?
Yes. However, please note that some out-of-country artists find the requirements for shipping art across the border to be cost prohibitive, particularly if they are not personally delivering the art. Please research the rules for bringing art into Canada prior to applying to make sure you are comfortable with the process.
Can I apply to more than one committee?
Yes. An artist can apply to more than one committee however artists that have been accepted to rent a booth will not be accepted into the Art Gallery show. An artist may be accepted in both the Art Gallery and Art Auction shows.
What is Artist InSite?
The Artist InSite is an education and demonstration feature within the Art Gallery where artists can talk to visitors and demonstrate their art form. The purpose of Artist InSite is to educate visitors about art and the western art genre. Artists who participate can bring in their art supplies to demonstrate but are not permitted to bring in new pieces for sale as only juried art can be sold in the Gallery. However, this is a great opportunity to talk to visitors and perhaps sell one of their pieces for sale in the Gallery.
Photographs can be submitted to Calgary Stampede Photo Committee. For more information, please go to http://westernshowcase.com/western-photo-gallery.html
