People of the Plains – Artistic Expressions
“People of the Plains – Artistic Expressions” is part of the Western Art Gallery, and is managed and operated by volunteers under the Calgary Stampede Western Showcase.
Each year during the Calgary Stampede, the Western Art Gallery exhibits and sells original artwork from new and emerging artists whose work represents the heritage, values, spirit, and grandeur of the West. Recognizing the vast contribution of Aboriginal art to western culture, the Gallery has a dedicated area to showcase and sell the work of talented Aboriginal artists depicting art specific to the Prairie Region. Approximately eight artists are accepted each year to the People of the Plains exhibit. Aboriginal artists are free to apply to both areas of the Gallery.
As the People of the Plains exhibit has continued to grow since its inception in 2006, the committee has evolved the exhibit from a strictly invitational event to a jury process, similar to the Western Art Gallery general show and sale. We are inviting artists from Western Canada’s Aboriginal communities to submit their applications to the People of the Plains show and sale. A jury committee will carefully review all applications and select the artists and artwork to be exhibited and sold during the Calgary Stampede in conjunction with the Western Art Gallery.
