Christie Simmons & Brian Volke
Christie Simmons and Brian Volke have shared the stage for the past number of years as part of the high-energy folk/roots/group called My Son Ted. As a duo, they retain a good dose of the larger group’s energy while biting into the meatier side of their songwriting passion with Brian on lead guitar, vocals and mandolin and Christie on whistles, vocals, ukulele and guitar.
As songwriters and musicians they drawn on influences as varied as Gillian Welch, Blue Rodeo and Spirit of the West. Their resulting original music is authentic, acoustic folk – western Canadiana woven with strains of Celtic, brushes of bluegrass and old-time prairie sensibility.
Christie’s songs reflect her widely varied musical past (renaissance to bluegrass - bagpipes to banjo) and speak to her interest in literary arts and her deep respect for language. She delivers them in a voice many consider to be her finest gift. Winnie’s Song, her release of 2010, is described as evocative and richly-coloured, elegant acoustic folk.
Brian, who is also an accomplished visual artist, plays musical styles that range from mellow and sweet through to boisterous, energetic romps. His songs tell the stories of the people and places he knows and the pleasures and problems of life. Apart from being a talented singer-songwriter, Brian is a spectacular, high-energy flatpick guitarist – a skill he liberally applies in his performances.
