Mariya Stokes is an award-winning singer/songwriter with small-town, country roots. Her fiercely honest songs, bright voice and quick wit moves and engages audiences every time she performs.
At the age of 18, Mariya moved from her hometown of Stavely, Alberta to pursue her career in the big city of Calgary. She cut her teeth as a performer at music events such as the Sled Island Festival, the Canadian Country Music Weekend in Fort Macleod and Cowboy Poetry Gatherings all over Alberta.
Stokes recently gained international recognition when she won two awards for her work, including the “2016 International Modern Country Songwriter of the Year” from the North American Country Music Association. Prior to that she was the winner of the Ponoka Stampede Talent Search, a runner up in the Global Country Star Search, and a finalist in the Calgary Stampede Talent Search.
She released her self-titled EP in 2011 and is currently recording a second album, due to be released in October 2016. When she’s not working on her own projects, she can also be found playing rhythm guitar and singing harmony in the band “Broomfield”. She is also a vocal coach, working with Brian Farrell in Calgary, to mentor aspiring singers of all ages.
Stokes cares deeply about supporting her community and volunteers her time at the Calgary Drop In and Rehab Centre. She is currently working on the second season of a project called “Shelter From the Storm”, writing original songs, poems and stories that capture the essence of the community with clients of the center. The organization released their first album entitled “Shelter From the Storm”, in August 2015 and will release their second in June 2015.
